Meet the Trainers

         
                                                                            Paula Gardiner - Academy owner


                         Based in Nanpean, Cornwall and welcomes learners to Enlighten from all over  the UK

Paula has been in the industry for over 35 years, initially starting her journey as a holistic therapist and consistently building her portfolio over the years. 


During this time she worked as a lecturer for Cornwall College, St Austell, before moving on to work for a private training company for 8 years.


Paula then decided to open her own training academy in 2018, to share her passion and wealth of knowledge of all her beauty services, nail services and holistic therapies with her learners. 


She built Enlighten to focus on 1-2-1 or small group training (maximum of 4). This allows learners extended time to cover the theory and to work practically, learning and perfecting their skills whilst receiving undivided attention.


Since Covid 19, Paula has worked extremely hard to add a blended learning option to Enlighten and there is a page dedicated to this on the website for more information if you are interested in this style of learning. 


This is ideal for those who live further afield and Enlighten has seen learners from far and wide including France, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland and numerous areas of the UK.


Paula is qualified in nearly all of the courses available.

Nicola Hovell



Nicola is based in Ferndown, Dorset and welcomes learners from all over

 Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire to her training venue.

I have been in the hair and beauty industry for about 30 years.  Initially I qualified as a hairdresser on leaving school, had a break from the industry and then went back into studying complementary therapies in 2009, I haven’t stopped learning yet! 


I previously owned a salon In West Moors Until COVID 19 and have worked from a home based treatment room since then. 


Upskilling is important to me andI love learning new skills to be able to offer both my clients and students new treatments and techniques. I believe every day is a school day!


 I also worked for Adult education for 6 years but  prefer to reach 1-2-1 or small groups, so Enlighten is perfect for me.


Updating and adding to my portfolio is important to me. 


I am looking to do my level 2 barbering course in sept 2023... Who knows where I go after that!


My portfolio contains  a vast array of treatments and I recently joined Temple spa to use their products in my treatments.


I am also creative and make handmade gemstone and crystal jewellery & bonsi trees. My passion is  crystals and their properties and using them in my treatments. To add to my portfolio I am also a qualified teaching assistant & can run a pub!

I have been in the beauty industry since leaving secondary school 20 years ago. Initially I studied beauty therapy levels 2 and 3 and then found myself gaining a passion for complimentary therapies, since then I have completed many holistic courses! While gaining these qualifications I worked in a local salon, then I moved on to working in a boutique hotel where I spent over 12 years. 


In 2014 I wanted to further myself some more and started my certificate in education so I could teach what I love to do! During this time I had my second child so since then I have been working self employed in a local salon part time, while raising the children.  I am now looking forward to getting back into teaching again!

Sam is based in Penzance, Cornwall and welcomes learners from the West of Cornwall or to cover any other                                                                                                         areas if needed.


I have been in the beauty industry for over 11 years. Prior to this I completed a Batchelor of Science degree to go in to teaching but changed  my mind instead and studied level 2 and 3 Beauty at Penwith College Penzance, where I won many competitions and competed as a finalist in World Skills UK in Birmingham NEC. I then went on to complete my Post Graduate Certificate in Education, and my assessors award and  taught at Truro & Penwith College, lecturing in beauty and Anatomy & Physiology for over 6 years.


I have also completed several  other courses independently as I love learning and improving my personal and professional development and feel it it’s important to always look to improve.  During all this time I have run and continue to maintain my own home salon carrying out many treatments.
